
Founded in
1995 in New York City, deep ellum ensemble is a multidisciplinary
performance group creating original theater works from a variety
of sources. Their uses of a cappella singing, chant and choral
speech, Tanztheater, various non-western performance elements
and their native Southern storytelling all combine for a wholly
unique aesthetic. Under the direction of Matthew Earnest, the
ensemble has presented its work at various New York venues, including
WAX, the Ontological-Hysteric Theatre, Raw Space, Washington Square
Church, One Dream Theater, Context, The Ohio Theater, Chelsea
Arts Theater, NADA, and on tour/in festivals in New Orleans, Louisiana;
Berlin, Germany; Dallas, Texas; Rhinebeck, New York; Dublin, Ireland;
and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
deep ellum ensemble is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, has
received commissions from The Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary
Festival and The Kingston Repertory Theater, and has received
The Audience Favourite Award (Dublin Festival Fringe, 1999) and
The BIFF Award for Excellence in Ensemble Acting (NY International
Fringe Festival, 1997).
