Founded in 1995 in New York City, deep ellum ensemble is a multidisciplinary performance group creating original theater works from a variety of sources. Their uses of a cappella singing, chant and choral speech, Tanztheater, various non-western performance elements and their native Southern storytelling all combine for a wholly unique aesthetic. Under the direction of Matthew Earnest, the ensemble has presented its work at various New York venues, including WAX, the Ontological-Hysteric Theatre, Raw Space, Washington Square Church, One Dream Theater, Context, The Ohio Theater, Chelsea Arts Theater, NADA, and on tour/in festivals in New Orleans, Louisiana; Berlin, Germany; Dallas, Texas; Rhinebeck, New York; Dublin, Ireland; and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

deep ellum ensemble is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, has received commissions from The Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival and The Kingston Repertory Theater, and has received The Audience Favourite Award (Dublin Festival Fringe, 1999) and The BIFF Award for Excellence in Ensemble Acting (NY International Fringe Festival, 1997).
